Vlieland General Cemetery

Vlieland is one of the Frisian Islands lying off the north coast of Holland, and is given over very largely to a bird sanctuary. The cemetery is on the north-western outskirts of Oost-Vlieland, about 1 kilometre from the quay, and most of the Commonwealth graves are in one prominently sited plot.

The cemetery contains the grave of Frank Edwin Ormerod, who died on 4 June 1942, whilst flying as an Observer with 76 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

Dirk Bruin, of Vlieland, who has been researching the Commonwealth casualties buried in Vlieland General Cemetery, has kindly provided copies of documentation relating to Frank Ormerod's death, as well as the photographs below.

The original documentation and photographs were obtained from the Town Hall Archive at Vlieland.

He advises that, although it is not clear who is being buried in the photographs, the burial of Frank Ormerod would have been very similar. Vlieland was occupied by the German Kriegsmarine during the Second World War, who showed respect to Allied casualties throughout the war.
