Arnold and James had been living with their aunt and uncle since the death of their mother, Mary, in 1899.
During the First World War Arnold served with the York and Lancaster Regiment.
Arnold appears on the Accrington Absent Voters List in 1918, where his address is recorded as 33 Major Street.
He married Alice Ann Demain on 22 September 1923.
