James was the son of Samuel Ormerod and Mary Elizabeth Ormerod (née Fielding), and was born on 31 August 1894.

At the time of the 1901 Census James and his brother, Arnoold, were living at 10 Commercial Street, Oswaldtwistle, with their uncle and aunt, James Ashworth and Elizabeth Anne Ashworth (née Ormerod). Details of the census entry are as follows.

James and Arnold had been living with their aunt and uncle since the death of their mother, Mary, in 1899.

During the First World War James served as a driver with the Royal Field Artillery, serving on the Western Front from 26 August 1915. The index cards to the First World War Medal Rolls show that he was entitled to the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

James appears on the Absent Voters List for Accrington in 1918, at which time his address is recorded as 33 Major Street. His Service Number is recorded as 56362 on the Absent Voters List.

James married Sarah Reid on 26 July 1923 at Haslingden Registry Office.

He died on 17 September 1954.
