John died on 3 February 1918, aged 36, whilst serving with the 56th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.

Royal Garrison Artillery Siege Batteries consisted of the largest guns and howitzers - mounted on massive fixed concrete emplacements or railways, and were consequently more or less static.

John is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery (Grave Ref. IV. D. 29).

The Soldiers Died in the Great War Database records that John enlisted in the Army in Edinburgh, and died of wounds on 3 February 1918.
